Using the VO2 Max test, Howard Head Performance can clarify the specific target heart rates that will enable you to reach your fitness goals more effectively, with less fatigue and fewer injuries.
"VO2 Max allows patients to see how well they are extracting oxygen and using it to power their body for activity such as walking, hiking or running," says Ryan Owen, Howard Head Performance Program Manager.
Owen says VO2 Max utilizes Mixing Chamber technology. "Mixing Chamber technology allows oxygen and carbon dioxide to be measured directly, and is the gold standard of VO2 Max testing," he said. "The [individual] gets set up with a breathing tube that allows VO2 Max to be calculated while performing the testing protocol, which can either involve running or walking, and typically lasts 20 minutes."
Owen has seen improvements using VO2 Max results as the framework for a cardiovascular training plan. He adds, "These improvements range from individuals being able to climb their first fourteener, to improving their triathlon and ironman times."
So, who exactly uses VO2 Max? Owen said it is for everyone.
"A VO2 Max test can be beneficial to [the] everyday hiker trying to take down their first fourteener, or for the professional athlete trying to improve their triathlon time," he said.
